SALIVA IN DIABETES-A REVIEW

Saliva is a unique fluid which plays an important role in maintaining the normal oral health of an individual. Diabetes is the major factor that leads to the changes in the salivary pH, salivary flow and dental caries. 32 articles were collected from the pubmed website and were included as citations in our present review. Salivary glucose and blood glucose level are directly proportional to each other. Normal level of salivary glucose is 0.5-1.00 mg/ml. Salivary hypofunction in diabetic individuals is observed. Diabetes leads to the reduction of salivary pPH and salivary flow. It also helps in multiplication of harmful microorganisms in the oral cavity.

ENAMEL COLOUR IN AGE ESTIMATION - A REVIEW

Age is an important factor in clinical practice, research, and court of law. One of the interesting applications of forensic odontology is age estimation by means of teeth. Dental development is relatively independent from other systems maturation. Detectable variation in the tempo of tooth mineralization and duration of tooth maturation between children from different geographical regions were reported. Enamel is translucent and varies in color from light yellow to grey white. The color of the teeth has been reported to be affected by chronological age. Enamel color may also depend on environmental factors viz. diet, occupational habits, vitamin deficiencies, fluoride level in drinking water etc. Enamel color was found to be associated with the chronological age . The enamel color was evaluated using a VITA classical shade guide. Identification of individual age with no birth record can be done using enamel color. Further advance in enamel shade for age estimation with increased sample size would enhance the knowledge and improve the accuracy of methods used in the field of forensic odontology.

PSYCHOSOCIAL IMPACT OF LOCKDOWN AMONG STUDENTS

Schools and colleges are closed to practice social distancing to reduce the spread of the coronavirus disease. Although online classes are being conducted, some teachers have reported that they do not find the online classes as effective as the real classroom. In online classes, there is reduced student interaction, lack of realistic experience and absence of community feeling. The lockdown is generally considered to have more negative psychological effects due to financial loss, inadequate supplies and fear of life. A cross sectional survey was conducted among students to study the psychosocial impact of lockdown among students.The study population in the study are the students with a sample size of 200. The questionnaire consisted of 31 questions divided into three parts and was shared to students using online survey platform. 17.5% of the students felt that they could communicate to friends the same way as that of regular class, 53.5% did not and 29% partially felt so. 57% of the students felt anxious that their studies are affected during this lockdown, 21.5% did not feel anxious and 21.5% partially felt anxious. Most of the students are showing some symptoms of depression due to the closed schools and colleges and social distancing as a result of lockdown. Hence teachers have to handle them differently after the lockdown ends

TOOTH REGENERATION- A REVIEW

Tooth loss is quite common worldwide. For treating a lost tooth, treatments such as dental implants (most common worldwide), fillings (made up of inert dental material), dentures, etc. These techniques can restore all the functions of a normal tooth. But using dental tissues and other dental related materials are still a mystery to the dental world. Pubmed research revealed 117 relevant articles. Out of which a total of ‘33’ systematic reviews and their original citations were included in this review. Tooth regeneration is a very complicated process and needs more depth study on this topic. From many of the researches that were reviewed in this article it was seen that there were many new methods developed but none were approved for applying in real life. Tooth regeneration is a vast topic and requires a lot of knowledge to be understood. This study can be used as reference for future research.

EFFECT OF SMOKING ON GINGIVAL HEALTH - A REVIEW

Smoking is recognised as a risk factor for human health. It is related to many problems like respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc. Smoking is associated with incidence of gingivitis, periodontitis, epithelial malignancy in the oral cavity. It increases the number and depth of periodontal patients. Loss of tissue strength caused due to harmful compounds like tobacco, increase gingival recession and changes to the oral cavity. Prevalence of moderate and severe diseases are higher in smokers than non-smokers. Smoking affects both gingival epithelium and connective tissue. Density of blood vessels is decreased in smokers. Effect of smoking on vascular status is caused by nicotine compounds. This review was done based on the articles obtained from various platforms like PubMed, PubMed central and Google Scholar. They were collected with a restriction in time basis from 2000-2020. The inclusion criteria were original research papers. In vitro, studied among various conditions and articles that contain pros and cons. Exclusion criteria came into account for review articles, retracted articles and articles of other languages. All the articles are selected based on the effect of smoking on gingival health. Thus, smoking results in various oral health problems like incidence of gingivitis, periodontitis, epithelial malignancy in the oral cavity. It affects gingival recession and changes to the oral mucosa. This review article gives knowledge about the correlation between smoking and health of gingival treatment with various dental problems.

ANXIETY LEVELS AND QUALITY OF LIFE OF WORKING INDIVIDUALS BEFORE AND DURING LOCKDOWN- A SURVEY

The anxiety among workers develops as their living has changed and economically are affected.Their future is not certain.The fear starts building as the lockdown period increases.To overcome such fears the government must take actions to provide proper employment and wages after the lockdown ends.A survey was done to know how the workers are affected and to know the difference of mentality of a working person before and during lockdown.A questionnaire was prepared and circulated to 100 workers and the responses were collected and analyzed through SPSS.85.3% of population are affected by the lockdown with high levels of anxiety. Therefore more than 50% of the participants are more anxious during lockdown than before lockdown.Many are affected but are confident that they can overcome the crisis after the lockdown comes to an end.To overcome such anxieties in future,the government has to take measures to avoid unemployment.

Viruses cause familiar infections and diseases like common cold, flu. They invade living, normal cells and use those cells to multiply and produce colonies of cells.Viral infection is a proliferation of harmful viruses inside the body. Viruses infect the host body by introducing their genetic material into the cells. The main aim of this study is to explore detailed information about saliva and viral infections. This research is seen as a scoping literature review. In seeking to identify the relevant articles, we used common databases such as the Pubmed and Google scholar online websites. Totally 27 articles are found related to the topic. 12 articles are used in this study. From the articles collected and reviewed, it is understood that viral infections can transmit through the saliva and oral specimens, though saliva protects the body from infections. It is concluded that, as saliva has become the transmitter of the virus, we should maintain proper oral hygiene and oral health to prevent these viruses. Future studies have to be done on the viral infections causing cancer.

ENAMEL REGENERATION - A REVIEW

Outermost covering of the teeth is dental enamel. Enamel is the hardest substance and highly mineralized tissue present in the human body which is almost 96%. It is formed by developing enamel organ epithelial cells called ameloblasts. The protein present in the enamel that helps in the mineralization process is Amelogenin. It is revealed that stem cells can be used for whole tooth regeneration and enamel regeneration but the main problem faced in fabricating cell free synthetic enamel is the formation of the complex interprismatic substance. The main aim of this review was to analyze and review on the various methods of enamel regeneration. This review was done based on the articles obtained from various search engines such as PubMed, PubMed central and Google scholar. They were collected with a restriction in time basis from 1997 - 2020. The inclusion criteria were original research papers, review articles, in vitro studied among various conditions and articles that contain pros and cons. Exclusion criteria came into account for retracted articles and articles of other languages. All the articles were selected based on Enamel Regeneration. The level of evidence of the reviewed articles were categorized as per the criteria of the centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, Oxford, UK. Enamel is the hardest mineralized tissue, which can withstand masticatory forces and gives protection to underlying dentin and pulp. Enamel cannot be regenerated since the ameloblast which forms the enamel, gets degenerated. Therefore, it should be preserved, as there is no material found to exactly duplicate it.
