The Role of Xylitol as a Substation for fluoride in Caries Prevention

Caries is one of the common infections that occurs in the oral cavity and affects populations across developed and developing nations. Studies show that dental caries is still a major health problem in most industrialized countries affecting 60–90% of schoolchildren and the vast majority of adults.
Xylitol is a naturally occurring five-carbon sugar alcohol derived from plants and agricultural materials. The name relates to the word “xylose” (wood sugar) from which xylitol was first made, and which is, in turn, derived from the particular structure (xylene) of hardwood from which xylose can be obtained.
