Comparative study of oral iron and intravenous iron sucrose for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women in India

Background: Anemia is a major public health problem worldwide, causing an unfavorable status in respect to upcoming pregnancy. About 20-50% world’s population is anemic among them the most common risk factor is pregnancy.
Material and Methods: All pregnant women suffered from iron deficiency anemia with hemoglobulin level 6-10 gm/dl and gestational age 16-32 were included in this study.Total 300 antenatal patients were involved in this study. All women attending antenatal OPD were screened for anemia. All women attending antenatal clinic were screened for anemia between 16-32 weeks of gestation. All participants were subjected to thorough history followed by clinical examination blood investigations such as complete blood count, peripheral blood smear, serum ferritin values, liver and renal function tests, stool examinations for worm infestations and occult blood loss of all cases were carried out and antenatal investigations as per our institution protocol were undertaken. The cases were randomly divided into two groups of 150 each. Oral Group: was given oral iron tablets containing 100 mg of elemental iron and 500 microgram folic acid daily throughout pregnancy. Intravenous Group: was given a 100 mg of elemental iron as iron sucrose. The formula used for calculation of total required IV elemental iron in the form of iron sucrose, that is, Total iron dose required (mg) = 2.4 x weight in kg x (target Hb – actual Hb of patient) g/dl + 500.17 The total calculated TDI was administered within three consecutive days, up to a maximum of 500 mg per day infusion in 500 ml of normal saline over a period of three to four hours. The infusion was given under supervision to avoid any untoward side effects. Any minor or major side effects were documented.

A Hospital Based Prospective Study to Assess the Clinic-Hematological Profile of Nutrition Anemia Among Adolescents at a Tertiary Care Centre

Background: Anemia is the world’s second leading cause of disability and thus one of
the most serious global public health problems. Adolescents of both sexes are
particularly vulnerable for developing anemia because of rapid growth and girls
additionally because of the onset of menstruation. The aim of this study to assess the
clinic-hematological profile of nutrition anemia among adolescents at a tertiary care
Materials& Methods: This is a hospital based observational study done on 50
adolescents attending OPD at JNUIMSRC, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India during one year
study period will be participating in this study as per the inclusion and exclusion
criteria. Anemia will be diagnosed according to the World Health Organisation (WHO)
criteria. Student t test (two tailed, independent) has been used to find the significance of
study parameters on continuous scale between two groups (Inter group analysis) on
metric parameters by using SPSS version 22.0 software.
Results: In 50 anemic adolescents studied, 34 were females, 16 were males. 50%
belongedto middle adolescence. 30% of study population belonged to lower middle
socioeconomicstatus according to modified Kuppuswamy’s classification. Anemia was
high amongvegetarian adolescent girls (55.88%). The commonest clinical presentation
was fatiguewhich was 56%. 42% adolescents had severe thinness according to WHO
classificationof body mass index (BMI). 48% had food skipping, 20.58% of adolescent
girls hadmenstrual irregularities. There was no significant difference among the
adolescent males and females pertaining to clinical eatures and laboratory values.
Conclusion: Nutritional anemia is a burden on adolescent children, as it affects the
transition of childhood to adulthood, and it influences the future health. B12 deficiency is
highly prevalent among the vegetarians. Nutritional awareness education should be
given to adolescents as they fear of gaining weight, irregular food habits, food faddism,
decreased intake of green leafy vegetables/animal proteins.

Neurophysiological Assessment And Cognition In Adult Females With Iron Deficiency Anaemia

Abstract: Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most prevalent form of anemia
especially in developing countries. Females of child bearing age are vulnerable for developing
IDA due to menstrual blood loss, dietary deficiency, pregnancy and lactation. IDA is
diagnosed by low blood hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels which correlates with body iron
stores. Of the various biological effects of iron, there are many evidences that iron effects
normal neurological functioning and development. This forms the biological basis for the
behavioral and cognitive developmental delays observed in iron-deficient anemic infants and
children. Reduced levels of blood hemoglobin and serum ferritin has been positively correlated
with low cognitive score and altered evoked potentials in females with IDA. Lack of research
studies to know the effect of IDA on neurophysiological parameters like cognitive
performance, event related potential and brainstem auditory response are little explored in
Indian adult females.
Methods: Cognitive status is assessed using Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale
which is validated testing scale for diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment and
neurophysiological assessment is done using auditory Event Related Potential (ERP / P300)
and Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA). MoCA score, ERP and BERA values
will be compared in females with iron deficiency anemia and normal females and also
associated with blood hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels. IDA may impair Cognitive
performance and hearing in adult females which may have tremendous impact on
understanding of speech and problem solving in them.
Hence, the aim of the study is to confirm a relationship between IDA and neuro-cognitive
features using cognitive scale and evoked potentials in adult females.

Protocol for Evaluation of comparative efficacy of Dietary supplement acquired from Kitchen Garden (Parasbag) and Gudharitaki Awaleha in Pandu Roga (Iron Deficiency Anemia)

Background: Pandu Roga is Pitta Pradhana Tridoshaja Vyadhi in which aggravated Pitta Dosha vitiates Kapha, Vayu, Rakta, Twaka, Mamsa and Ojas. It can be correlated with Iron deficiency Anemia, due to similarity in clinical features. Inadequate intake of iron rich food in diet is the main cause of Iron deficiency anemia.
Aim: Evaluation of effect of dietary supplement acquired from Kitchen garden with Gudharitaki Awaleha on RBCs, Hb%, MCV, MCHC, MCH for making Kelapur village anemia (Iron deficiency) free. Methodology: 120 subjects (60 in each) will be classified randomly into 2 parallel groups. Group A i.e. Trial group –Gudharitaki Awaleha 5 gm BD with Dietary supplement will be given after meal two times a day with lukewarm water for 90 days and Group B i.e. Control group – Gudharitaki Awaleha 5 gm BD will be given after meal two times a day with lukewarm water for 90 days. Assessment will be noted on 0 & 90 th day. Result: Variations will be seen in subjective as well as objective parameters and inferences. Conclusion: The effectiveness of Gudharitaki Awaleha with dietary supplement will be more than only Gudharitaki Awaleha
