ASSESSMENT OF CASES OF PERIANAL SEPSIS

Abstract

Background: Anorectal infection and sepsis are common challenging problems. The present study was conducted to assess cases of perianal sepsis.
Materials & Methods: 52 patients of perianal sepsis of both genders underwent rectal and abdominal examination. Laparotomy or laparoscopy was performed in all patients and tissue and fluid culture were sent at the time of surgery for analysis.
Results: Out of 52 patients, males were 32 and females were 20. Common symptoms observed were pain in 42, peri anal discharge in 45 and faecal incontinence in 12 cases. The difference was non- significant (P> 0.05). Associatedcomorbidity such as hypothyroidism was seen in 4, hypertension in 8 and peripheral arterial disease in 2 patients. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). Surgical procedure performed were laparotomy in 22, laparoscopic assisted procedures in 18, ileostomy in 7 and colostomy in 5 patients. The difference was significant (P< 0.05).
Conclusion: Perianal sepsis were managed with laparoscopic assisted procedures, laparotomy, ileostomy and colostomy.
