AbstractThis study is aimed to determine and assess the incidence of consanguineous marriages in parents of patients presenting with cleft palate. This retrospective study involved 48 patients who reported to the Outpatient Dental Department of Cleft and Craniofacial Centre of Saveetha Dental College, Chennai between the year June 2019-March 2020. Parameters such as age, gender, history of consanguineous marriages and presence of other cleft were evaluated and assessed by a single examiner and reviewed by 2 independent investigators. In this study, we observed that the incidence of consanguineous marriages in parents presenting with cleft palate was 18.75%. There also seemed to be a slight female predilection of cleft palate patients with a history of consanguinity (55.55%) as compared to males(44.4%). Within the limits of this study, the consanguinity is associated with cleft palate, the incidence usually being the least among isolated cleft palate patients.
