Abstract

Proximal humeral fractures are commonly presented in the orthopedic practice. The usual method of treatment was conservative in the past. However, the results and functional outcomes were not good. With the development of PHILOS locking plates, the functional outcomes are known to be improved. We in the present study tried to evaluate the functional outcomes of proximal humerus fractures treated with PHILOS plates. Thirty cases of fracture of the proximal humerus in adults were operated and fixed using PHILOS plating in savitha medical college and hospital Chennai. The study period was from December 2018 to November 2019. The cases were followed up from two months to six months. Most of the cases were young adult males with ages ranging between 22 to 79 years. The functional outcome of the surgical treatment of proximal humerus fractures in adults is interpreted. Most cases were operated within three days of the injury. Anesthesia used for all cases. The Deltopectoral approach was used for proximal humerus fracture. A Universal shoulder immobilizer was applied for all operated cases. Sutures were removed on the 10th postoperative day. Mobilization was started after suture removal in all cases. Open reduction and internal fixation could be considered as the treatment of choice if there were no contraindications for this because it is important to maintain length, opposition, axial alignment, and rotational alignment if a good range of movement of the proximal humerus is to be restored. This is achieved in the present study
