AbstractBackground: In developing countries, Diarrhea is known as a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Due to this nearly 2 million children died below 5 years age every year. Out of all cases of diarrhea, nearly 2-3 % would have an imbalance of electrolytes, acid-base status and may prove fatal if not initiated prompt treatment.Aim and Objectives: To assess the efficacy of probiotic honey in children with acute diarrhea. Material and Methods: This study was randomized double blind, placebo controlled clinical study. Children with acute diarrhea had been allocated randomly; allocation concealment was done to prevent selection bias and double-blind method. Sample size was 15 in each group.
Observations and Results: Efficacy of B. coagulans was evaluated by consideration of incidence, physical examination, type of adverse events noticed and clinical laboratory tests. Stool test helps in diagnosing as well as to find out the cause of symptoms affecting the digestive tract. Treatment with B. coagulans reduced mean values for duration of diarrhea, frequency of defecation, and abdominal pain, while consistency of stool improved. Conclusion:Probiotic honey on duration, frequency and associated symptoms such as pain in abdomen, dehydration grade in acute diarrhea efficiently works over placebo-plain honey with the conventional management.
