Abstract

Background: Globally, diabetes is one of the most common non-communicable diseases leading to mortality and morbidity in many developed countries. Insulin resistance and obesity both combine to cause dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. Postprandial triglycerides may have a greater role in the atherosclerotic process than fasting triglycerides. Patients with early atherosclerotic changes are generally asymptomatic. Only when the vascular occlusion reaches a significant percentage do they become symptomatic. Assessing carotid intimal thickness using carotid Doppler has been shown as a non-invasive and quantitative method to detect these early changes
