A Review on Cleft Palate and Heart Defects

Abstract

Organogenesis takes place on Days 25-28 of intrauterine life. Any insult like environmental, developmental or nutritional to the embryo during this period will lead to malformations. Associated anomalies are classified according to the organs affected.Cleft is a gap or split in the upper lip or roof of the mouth(palate) which is present from birth. There are 3types of cleft palate.The most common heart defect is Ventricular septal Defect and Atrial septal defect. Early identification of the problems and early intervention for the same is indicated in children with this type of conditions. Majority of the cleft palate are seen between 10-12 weeks of age. As per latest review,Cleft palate and its associated Heart defect has become a common issue and it is treated most efficiently by latest technology like using Hydrogel treatment, Catheter procedure, Hybrid procedure etc.
