Abstract

In present study, the polyherbal formulation containing volatile oils was evaluated for its protective effect on Freund’s complete adjuvant induced arthritis in wistar rats. Camphor oil from Cinnamomum camphora, Mentha oil from Mentha piperita and Ajwain oil from Trachyspermum ammi were used to formulate aerosol formulation. Paw edema volume, body weight, arthritic index, joint swelling, organ weight (spleen and thymus) and haematological parameters, supported by histopathological changes of tibiotorsal joint and radiological changes were estimated. Polyherbal formulation reduces paw edema volume, arthritic index, joint swelling, thymus weight and increases body weight and spleen weight. Histopathological observations revealed the significant reduction in cellular infiltration, edema, bone necrosis and arthritic score. The radiological observations of metatarsal, phalangeal and ankle joints indicated less swelling and deformities. Thus present study indicated that formulation exerted remarkable antiarthritic effect against Freund’s complete adjuvant induced arthritis in wistar rats.
